2023 Summer Camp Registration - -Summer Youth Program at the Depot Lane Theatre |
Youth Cultural Performing Arts Program at the Depot Lane Theater
A Brief History
The free Summer Youth Cultural Performing Arts program sponsored by Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association (SCHA) has made its home at the Depot Lane Theater since 2002 when 28 children came together for a summer enrichment experience. The program first began as the “TrainWhistle & Caboose Kids” theater program, but later evolved to include vocal and instrumental music camps as well as theater camps.
In the years that followed the first summer program in ’02, hundreds of young people have taken part in puppet workshops and performances, playwriting workshops, theatrical workshops and performances, improvisational theater workshops, vocal music camps and performances, and instrumental camps and performances focusing on different styles of music, including jazz, blues, salsa, and classical.
A total of 14 original plays written by the program’s Artistic Director, Lillian Spina-Caza, have been performed, more than once, on the black box stage located on the second floor of the Creamery Building, just one of the buildings located in the Depot Lane Complex. Original music was written or arranged for several of the plays by local and renowned musicians and composers, Kim and Reggie Harris. As many of the plays and program themes have been based on or adapted from folktales and short stories from different cultures, the TrainWhistle & Caboose Kids eventually evolved into the Summer Youth Cultural & Performing Arts Program.
The program continues to be funded through private donations, admissions, and decentralization grants from the New York State Council on the Arts. From the very beginning it was decided the workshops would be offered free of charge to young people in Schoharie and neighboring counties, and that no auditions would be required. Admittance to the program is on a first sign-up basis.
The summer programs at Depot Lane Theater offer a safe and enriching experience for children and youth in grades 1-12. It is also a place where members of the community can enjoy music and theater productions during the summer months. In addition to music, theater, and dance, program participants have also enjoyed learning about the arts, crafts, and foods of the various countries and cultures that are highlighted each season.
